Prof. Chris Boulton - Diploma in Brewing Module 2 Tutor

Professor Chris Boulton is a world expert on yeast and fermentation with almost 40 years of experience in the industry, holding several technical positions at major brewing companies.

Chris started his career in 1984 when he joined Bass Brewers in Burton-on-Trent, England, as a Fermentation Scientist and later as a Microbiology Research Project Manager. Chris then moved to MolsonCoors, holding various research posts, before entering the world of academia as a Lecturer in Brewing Science and Honorary Professor at the University of Nottingham. Lately, he has been an R&D Consultant for SABMiller.

Among many professional achievements, he is the co-author of two standard brewing textbooks, Brewing Yeast and Fermentation with David Quain and Brewing: Science and Practice alongside Dennis Briggs, Roger Stevens and Peter Brookes.

With a First-Class Bachelor Degree and a PhD in Microbial Biochemistry, Chris has also been a tutor in yeast and fermentation for the IBD for around 20 years, as well as an external examiner in brewing and distilling at Heriot-Watt University.

An IBD member since the start of his career and a Fellow of the Institute for over 20 years, Chris is a natural choice as a tutor for anyone wanting to pursue perfection in brewing.

Currently living in Burton on Trent in the UK, Chris can also be found spending what spare time he has in his music studio at the bottom of his garden. Here he makes electronic music (or at least that’s what he calls it); others, including his wife, might disagree!
